Growing up in east Michigan my journey in animal husbandry actually started years ago in Iowa. My farm was home to many types of animals, including alpacas, mini donkeys, peafowl, etc... and of course, German Shorthaired Pointers. In 2021 I made the decision to come back home to east Michigan and continue working with the dogs I fell in love with. I am now happy to be back home and providing high quality pointers at an affordable cost to East Michigan.
Unlike many others, the German Shorthaired Pointer breed has a strong reputation for its preserved, high quality bloodlines. The shorthairs that we have today are the same good natured, intelligent and lovable dogs that have been around for almost 150 years. Known for Athleticism, Intelligence, Affection and Beautiful Look… this breed deserves the reputation it has. Come see what all the hype is about and reserve your GSP with Bay Area Shorthairs!
"The versatile, medium-sized German Shorthaired Pointer is an enthusiastic gundog of all trades who thrives on vigorous exercise, positive training, and a lot of love. GSP people call their aristocratic companions the 'perfect pointer.' Male German Shorthaired Pointers stand between 23 and 25 inches at the shoulder and weigh anywhere from 55 to 70 pounds; females run smaller. The coat is solid liver (a reddish brown), 'solid black, liver and white, or black and white' in distinctive patterns. The dark eyes shine with enthusiasm and friendliness. Built to work long days in the field or at the lake, GSPs are known for power, speed, agility, and endurance. 'Noble' and 'aristocratic' are words often used to describe the overall look. GSPs make happy, trainable pets who bond firmly to their family. They are always up for physical activities like running, swimming, organized dog sports in fact, anything that will burn some of their boundless energy while spending outdoors time with a human buddy." Please contact us if you cannot find an answer to your question.
I get this question a lot, and yes there is a very good reason. This is for the safety of the dog and NOT for aesthetic appeal. I will explain...
Dogs of this nature (specifically hunting dogs) that expect to be running fields and timber have a very high risk of injuring their tails and dewclaws. These are very painful injuries and can often end up requiring surgery. I have experienced this with a dog before, it is painful situation to get through. A responsible breeder of these types of dogs dock the tails and remove the dewclaws for their long term safety.
At 3 days old, the puppies tails are docked and dewclaws are removed. It is a very quick simple procedure that does not over stress the puppy. They are away from Mom for only a few seconds, and the momentary pain is already over. Going forward, we can be confident that our puppies are safe for the remainder of their lives.
This is another common question I get. How can a hunting dog be a good family dog?
Shorthairs are certainly well know for their athleticism and intelligence, but loyalty and companionship also runs strong in the breed. These dogs are highly trainable and bond very firmly to their family members. GSPs love to show their affection. Very understanding of young children, they integrate well with all families. American Kennel Club ranks GSPs a 5/5 in both "Affection with Family" AND "Good with Young Children". Without a question German Shorthaired Pointers make incredible family dogs. Feel free to contact us with any questions about the breed!
A "gun trained dog" is a pup that has been acclimated to the loud sporadic sounds of a firearm. This is a process hunting dogs go through first before starting to train for the field. In my experience, gun training a dog is beneficial not just for hunting dogs, but for ALL DOGS. Whether you and your pup live in the city or country, in an apartment, house or farm, loud sporadic noises anywhere have the potential to cause stress and anxiety for your dog. The process of gun training a dog doesn't just prepare them for the sounds of a firearm, but also to be comfortable regardless where a loud sporadic noise is coming from (ie thunderstorms, trains, traffic, planes, construction, etc.). This is a very beneficial quality in a dog for both their own sake as well as the owners.
I start gun training my litters on Day 1, starting at a further distance and with a quieter firearm (.22 caliber). We gradually work our way through the louder firearms until the puppies are comfortable around the sound of a 12 gauge shotgun. By the time the puppies are ready for their new homes, they are completely gun trained. Come see the benefits of a gun trained pup and get your next dog with Bay Area Shorthairs!
